Dr. Yuanyuan Zhang is a director of tissue therapy and Associate Professor in the Wake Forest Institute for Regeneration Medicine (WFIRM) at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He received his M.D. from Jiangxi Medical Collage in China and obtained PhD in University of Lausanne in Switzerland. After completing postdoc training, he has been a faculty member at University of Oklahoma Health Science Center and then WFIRM.
Dr. Yuanyuan Zhang's research interests focus on tissue specific stem cell, collage-based decellularized biomaterials, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine in surgery, particularly in andro-urology, for more than 25 years. He was the first to demonstrate that stem cells exist in urine and that those cells (urine derived stem cells, USC), with self-renewal and multipotent capacity, have a number of potential applications in cell-based therapy or noninvasive diagnosis in surgery or urology. He has a productive record of 185 original peer-reviewed research, review and chapter publications. In addition, he has received 12 patents for his work and applied for 2 more. As a PI, Dr. Zhang led NIH-funded studies in the field of urinary tract tissue reconstruction with bone marrow stem cells and urinary incontinence treated with urine-derived stem cells and IGF1. At the institute, he has expanded his research to include studies of patients derived stem cells, decellularized extracellular matrix biological scaffolds, and alginate microspheres to deliver growth factors in treatment of stress urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, bladder and urethra defects and kidney failure.
Dr. Zhang serves as a guest editor or editorial members for 26 scientific journals and a peer reviewer for 28 peer-reviewed journals in surgery, urology, tissue engineering, biomaterials, and related fields.
